Web services include Web Map Services, Feature Services, Geoprocessing Services, and Print Services. Web Map Service is a protocol for serving georeferenced map images over the internet that are generated by a map server using data from a GIS database. WMS are especially useful to the display of spatial data where the user only needs to consume the data, not edit it.

GIS web service provides access to GIS data or functionality over the web in a standardized fashion. A service can be consumed or integrated into a web mapping application making it an interface by which an application can access your data or GIS functionality.
